Our photo is of a smiling Sarah Abdel-Moneim and Sarah Greaves, Princess and Queen of the Morecambe Carnival in 1987.

It’s not long now until a new Carnival Queen will be crowned as the event makes its comeback this year on May 4.

I’ve been browsing through some old carnival programmes from days of yore. This photo is from the 1988 edition.

We have also been loaned a copy of the Morecambe and Heysham Sports Carnival programme from 1936. That year, it coincided with the final race in the Cross Bay Swimming Championship.

Aside from the traditional carnival parade along the prom, other events in 1936 included a golf tournament, swimming gala in the Super Swimming Stadium, a baby show in the Tower Ballroom, an open bowling tournament at the Cumberland View Hotel, a gymkhana on the West End sands, fireworks display, band concert at the Harbour Bandstand, and a sheep dog trials.
