Tom's run will help Middleton charity A Breath for Life

When everyone else was wondering what to do during lockdown, Tom Greenwood decided to start running for charity.

Tom, 26, a proficient jockey who is more used to his horse doing the running, took his training seriously.

His motivation was to help others and once the London Marathon was cancelled, he knew many charities would lose out this year.

He chose a local charity, A Breath for Life oxygen unit based in Middleton which had previously supported his sister Becky, as well as two national charities, Mind and Movember men's health.

Tom is the manager of Greenwoods Fish Merchants, a wholesale fish merchant on White Lund Estate.

His day starts early so he dedicated his afternoons to running, increasing mileage each successive week.

One evening a week he also works with Has2beHappy agency caring for young adults with special needs. These young men supported Tom and their enthusiasm encouraged him to keep on running and eventual success.

On July 11 Tom completed his individual challenge - in a time of 3 hours and 50 minutes - and his Just Giving page has raised more than £1,500.

A Breath for Life chairman Jane Dean said: "We are indebted to Tom and his efforts to raise money on our behalf. He is fully aware of our need for an extension and his donation will help to push the project along. Tom is a special young man who thinks of others.”
