Nine further coronavirus deaths announced within Morecambe Bay hospitals trust

Nine further deaths from coronavirus were announced today at the University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust.

The way deaths are announced nationally has now changed, and as a result only trust-wide figures are being released by NHS England.

The trust includes the Royal Lancaster Infirmary, Westmorland General Hospital and Furness General Hospital.

The latest announcement brings the total in its facilities to 71.

As of last Friday, 18 people were known to have died at the Royal Lancaster Infirmary who have tested positive for Covid-19.

New figures released yesterday (April 6) show that Lancashire's total has risen to 981 cases.

That includes 838 cases in the region controlled by Lancashire County Council - the highest number for any area across the north west.
