Lancaster charity launches 2021 Year of Adventure campaign

CancerCare’s Year of Adventure will feature a series of outdoor events ranging from low-level therapeutic walks to high altitude mountain scrambles designed to encourage people to take on a challenge for 2021 and raise money.

The campaign is a partnership between the Slyne Road charity, which offers free professional therapy services for people affected by cancer and bereavement, and Lancaster-based Adventure Trails, which provides outdoor events and guided walks across the north of England.

Confirmed events so far include:

• Sunday 28 February 2021 – Reconnection Walk around Arnside Knott

• Sunday 9 May 2021 - Helvellyn Hike via Striding and Swirral Edges

• Sunday 27 June 2021 – Reconnection Walk around Grand-over-Sands

• Sunday 4 July 2021 – Ennerdale Paddle boarding and walk

• Sunday 5 September 2021 – Helvellyn Hike via Striding and Swirral Edges

More events will be added throughout the year and all the events will be led by qualified and experienced guides and participants will also be asked to raise a minimum amount of sponsorship as a condition of signing up.

CancerCare fundraiser Kat Michaels said: “This year, our fundraising programme has been badly disrupted by the pandemic as it meant we couldn’t do our mass-participation events such as the Cross Bay Walk.

"Our Year of Adventure will enable us to run the outdoor events our supporters love and, by doing more smaller events over the course of a year, we will hopefully be able to continue doing them should the coronavirus uncertainty continue into 2021.”

All events will be fully Covid-secure and Adventure Trails was recently awarded the “We’re Good to Go” industry standard in recognition of how it has adapted its operations in line with Government and public health guidelines.

Co-founder of Adventure Trails, Julia Possener, said: “We are thrilled that we’re going to be delivering a fabulous programme of micro adventures.

"There will be a wide range of exciting experiences ranging from the popular to the unique, and we are really looking forward to welcoming supporters of CancerCare back into the wonderful landscape that we are so lucky to have on our doorstep.”
