Lancaster city centre deserted as government's coronavirus crackdown takes effect

Lancaster was like a ghost town today, as police patrolled the streets amidst the latest government crackdown designed to keep people in their homes during the coronavirus pandemic.

Despite the sunshine, only a few dozen people were in the city centre, and only a handful of shops remained open - among them Marks & Spencer, who were giving out free bouquets of flowers to customers.

Those shops that were open had floor markers and barriers, as well as staff reminding shoppers to remain respectful and keep their distance. Some wore gloves and masks for extra protection as they went about their business.
