SCHOOL SPOTLIGHT: Thurnham Glasson CE Primary School

It isn't every day that school children are shooing swans away from the playground.

But for the little ones at Thurnham Glasson CE Primary School, living among the local wildlife is just one of the perks that this small school offers them.

Backing off the marina, this historic school originally built in 1833 has recently had a modern new classroom extension adjoining the old school building, which provides a dynamic space for early year children and will enable the school to offer nursery provision.

The school currently has 16 children and focuses on promoting what they deem as their 'family feel', with happy children studying in a unique location.

Headteacher Rune Duncan is now appealing for prospective parents to consider enrolling their children, with plans in place to expand the school and commence the nursery in the new year.

The school's positive motto 'let your light shine' is reflected in their Ofsted report, which earlier this year recognised it to be a ‘happy place’ with ‘high ambitions for all pupils’ with a curriculum that is ‘crammed full of opportunities that enhance pupils’ personal development’.

Rune said: "Our school is a family and has a strong community feel. We have an ethos of teamwork and family values, and we pride ourselves on our links with the local church and wider community. We are a small school with a big heart.”

All the children at Thurnham Glasson can enjoy special activities including 'Wicked Wednesdays' - when the school cook spoils them with delicious home-cooked treats - as well as a Friday celebration worship, a 'leading light' and ‘V.I.P.’ award ceremony to mark individual achievements by every child.

Outside, the children can enjoy the fruits of their labour in their garden, where an array of fruit and vegetables are grown and then used in their school meals.

“We can offer more personalised input than some larger schools by tailoring our educational provision and recognising the achievements of every individual,” Rune said.
