Ella Henderson was a guest on my show on The Bay a few months ago just before she released her debut single ‘Ghost.’
She was telling me how nervous she was and praying that the song would do well in the charts.
In case you have been on another planet this summer, the song went straight in the charts at number one and has become one of the biggest hits of the year. I invited Ella back on the show to reflect on the last six months.
“It’s just so surreal and unexpected. The positive reaction it received was overwhelming and I can’t thank everyone enough.”
Ella is just about to release her debut album ‘Chapter One.’ She is really excited about getting her music out there.
“I’ve lived with these songs for two years now while I have been writing the album but I just can’t wait to get them out.”
Ella wrote the album with a stellar list of collaborators including Ryan Tedder, Salaam Remi, Al Shux, Babyface and TMS. It shows her record label must have massive confidence in her and I guess the success of ‘Ghost’ has paid off.
“Everything on the album is in the boundaries of being soulful and all the tracks are autobiographical. There are a lots of stripped back tracks on there too, most done in just one take. I want people to feel like they are in the room with just me and a piano. I want it to feel honest.”
The next step is America. Ella told me: “I went there recently and it was amazing. I got to perform on Good Morning America. It’s incredible to know there is a tiny buzz of me out there.”
I asked Ella to name her highlight of her whirlwind six months. “Probably going to number one,” she told me. I was so nervous about it coming out and putting myself out there but it did so well.
“I actually found out I was number one live on radio which was a completely surreal moment.
“It was my debut single and has done better than my wildest dreams. I can’t ask for more.”
