Tickling the ivories will be taken to a new level at a concert season in Lancaster this autumn.
Some of the world’s best pianists have been lined up to perform in the Great Hall at Lancaster University on the new Steinway piano, acquired following a major fund-raising campaign last year.
Performing the Steinway’s inaugural recital on October 25 will be Nikolai Demidenko, described as “one of the titans of his generation”.
Two of the UK’s most exceptional pianists – Peter Donohoe and Martin Roscoe – will join forces on November 8 when they take on a programme featuring Mozart, Brahms and Debussy.
Another popular UK pianist, Howard Shelley, will direct Opera North’s orchestra from the keyboard of the Steinway on November 29 for a performance of Beethoven’s Emperor concerto.
Away from the piano, the rest of the season ranges from the classical to jazz, and even flamenco.
Manchester Camerata Ensemble return to Lancaster for a third year on November 1 for a concert in the round.
Fans of the saxophone should put November 15 in their diaries as Sax Assault combines the talents of nine saxophones with the compositions of Andy Scott.
Another nine musicians, making up the Fitkin Band, perform a gypsy and medieval-themed concert on November 22.
Ending the season on a high will be Calaita Flamenco Son, presenting an evening of authentic flamenco music on December 6.
