REVIEW: Hotel Edison, New York City

It can be difficult to catch your breath while visiting New York.
Hotel Edison.Hotel Edison.
Hotel Edison.

A city that rarely blinks let alone sleeps, there's so much to see in what feels like no time at all. Thankfully, Hotel Edison, one of seven distinct properties in Triumph Hotels' Manhattan portfolio, places you right at the heart of all that midtown Manhattan madness. Just a few steps from the neon hustle and bustle of Times Square, its location on 47th Street is not just ideal, it is a necessity for anybody after a taste of Big Apple authenticity, especially for the first time.As you walk through the revolving door into the stunning grand foyer, it almost feels as if you are stepping onto a film set.The glamorous interior oozes old Hollywood, wrapped in that timeless Art Deco architecture - a design which was heralded as a "masterpiece" upon its opening in 1931. A hotel steeped in history, the Edison boasts plenty in the way of 21st Century luxuries as well. I was staying in one of the Signature Suite rooms. Spacious and immaculately presented, the complimentary gifts on arrival were a lovely touch. The room featured a 42-inch TV in the main bedroom, sofa and chair in the adjoining suite along with another TV a custom marble bathroom, impressive in-room WiFi and the plushest of King size beds. New York in June can be a hot and humid affair and the two large air conditioning units were the freshest of blessings.Step outside the Edison's doors and Broadway theatres light up the surrounding streets accompanied by a dizzying array of restaurants and bars. The Rum House is a superb cocktail spot situated at the bottom of the hotel. A swanky candlelit establishment, the live jazz is special, the cocktails (try the Dark and Stormy) delectable. Danny's Gourmet Deli, a stone's throw away, serves a mean hot pastrami sandwich while I had the best slice of pizza I have ever tasted at Patzeria Perfect Pizza, one street down on 46th. You'll certainly not struggle for nearby places to eat.The closest subway station to the Edison is just two minutes away. If you are staying in New York for a few days I would definitely recommend buying an unlimited seven-day Metro Card for $31. Central Park (0.7 mile), the Empire State Building (one mile) and Rockefeller Centre (0.5 mile) are all within comfortable walking distance of the Edison but if you're wanting to explore further afield it's certainly the best way to go.For the fitness fanatic, there is a newly renovated 24-hour multi-function gym situated on the second floor of the Edison which I did manage to at least look at while I was there. Optimistically, I had packed my gym gear but it turns out hours spent walking around the sights of New York is more than enough cardio. My feet are still aching as I write this. In fact, as I was hobbling up the Empire State Building for the second time in a day (because obviously I had to see the view at night as well) the only thing that kept me going was the fact I would be returning to one of the comfiest beds I have ever slept in. If you're planning on getting up at 7am to crack on with that packed itinerary, good luck. Life in New York is at times fast paced, frenetic and more than a little daunting. The Edison goes out of its way to ensure your experience is a relaxed and enjoyable one. The 24-hour security team is a comforting and reassuring presence while the warm and courteous reception staff are always on hand should you have any issues or questions. A Managers' Reception, held from 5pm until 6pm every Tuesday and Friday offers up complementary light bites and music and is a great way to meet fellow guests. As are the six neighbourhood walking tour options, put on free of charge by Triumph Hotels, these are an ideal way of unearthing some of the city’s hidden gems. When visiting New York, the choice of hotel may not necessarily top your list of priorities given the amount of things there are to do.Booking a reservation at Hotel Edison though will easily be one of the best decisions you make...along with not taking your gym gear.
