Morecambe band The Heartbreaks’ new album is set to cause a stir not only for the music – but for its controversial front cover.

The sleeve of ‘We May Yet Stand A Chance’ shows the four band members pulling a coffin by a rope across Morecambe Bay.

Lead singer Matthew Whitehouse told The Visitor he’s worried some people may link this with the Morecambe Bay cockling tragedy of 2004.

But, said Whitehouse, this was not the reason why they chose the striking image.

He said: “The album deals with the demise of many things, like conviction, commitment, the homogenisation of the high street.

“The coffin seems like a great symbol for all of that.

“I also like the idea of a gang all facing the same way and pulling in the same direction.

“I was watching the film Django from 1966, where a coffin is dragged across the desert.

“You can take whatever you like from it, but I’m really, really proud of the cover.

“It’s one of the best things we’ve ever done.”

The cover photo was shot on the sands at Middleton by Irish photographer Rowan Gallagher.

Matthew said: “We chose colourful imagery for the cover of (our 2012 album) Funtimes, but the music was about loving, loss, anger and frustration, and so nobody got it.

“This time, I think it makes sense.

“I like the sky imagery, and it’s very cinematic and wide screen.

“A lot of the music on the album is like that.”

The full album tracklisting is as follows:

1. Paint The Town Beige

2. Absolved

3. Hey, Hey Lover

4. Robert Jordan

5. ¡No Pasarán!

6. Bittersweet

7. Fair Stood The Wind

8. Man Overboard

9. This Is Not Entertainment

10. Rome

The band has recently toured with We Are Scientists and headlined their own show at Club Koko in London on Friday night.

A UK tour is planned for May to herald the album release.

‘We May Yet Stand A Chance’ is out on June 2. The Visitor has heard some of it, and it’s magnificent.

The group’s next single ‘Absolved’ is out on May 25 and is arguably the best song The Heartbreaks have come up with to date.
