For our readers that don't have a Twitter account the rest of this article is for you.

Although Twitter has been in the national news a lot recently, there are people that don't really know what all the fuss is about. Twitter is a micro-blogging and social networking service that facilitates the sending and receiving of updates. On other services, they would be called posts but on Twitter, they're called tweets. Uniquely these posts, sorry 'tweets', are limited to 140 characters in length.

The restricted number of characters (similar to mobile phone SMS messages) brings the publishing of blogs (blogging) to a much wider audience.

Most people don't have the time, or perhaps don't feel confident about writing long posts for a blog. Twitter enables the user to tell their friends, family and more (these are called followers) what they are doing and thinking about in a short sentence or two.

If blogging of any kind isn't for you, Twitter can still be incredibly useful and a lot of fun. You can use Twitter to follow other interesting people, friends, family and of course your very own Visitor.

Millions have taken-up Twitter including most major news organisations, businesses and even celebrities like Stephen Fry, Jonathon Ross and Five's Gadget Show presenter Jason Bradbury.

What do I do now? Just go to twitter.com and register. Then come back to this page, click on the link above and start following @The_Visitor. The service is free to use on the web but if you link your mobile and use SMS you may incur phone provider/network fees. If your mobile phone has a browser, you can access Twitter at m.twitter.com

So join in the conversation, be part of local news and get sneak previews of up-coming stories. Follow @The_Visitor
