MORECAMBE assistant boss Mark Lillis praised his side's attitude after this dramatic penalty shoot-out success.

Lillis saw his side come back from 2-0 down with a rousing second half performance to end the game all square before winning the penalty shoot-out 4-2.

The Shrimps' kept their nerve superbly with David Artell, Paul Lloyd, Jon Newby and Garry Hunter all scoring past Joe Anyon. But it was keeper Steven Drench who grabbed the headlines with two fine saves from Shane Tudor and Danny Glover as the Shrimps moved into the regional quarter-finals for the first time.

Lillis also praised the crowd for their efforts in the victory.

He said: "The lads were magnificent, I can't praise them enough. Even at 2-0 down I didn't think we were out. We scored a goal at the perfect time and just kicked on from there.''

He added: "I thought the crowd were superb as well. They turned out in numbers which was great considering we have a game on Friday as well and really got behind us.''

Morecambe had the worst possible start when they conceded after just four minutes as Justin Miller was left unmarked to head home Shane Tudor's left wing corner.

Morecambe hit back with Matty Blinkhorn forcing James Anyon into two neat saves before Miller was denied a second goal by the woodwork after a storming run into the box.

But his disappointment was short lived as Vale did score a second goal on the half hour through Luke Rodgers as he curled a free kick into the top right hand corner.

The Shrimps faced an uphill battle at the break but an early second half strike from Hunter gave them hope as he slotted home Wayne Curtis's flick.

Sammy McIlroy's side raised the tempo with Curtis only denied by a superb Anyon save before hitting the post from 25 yards with a stinging low shot.

They were not to be disappointed for long however as Jon Newby levelled the scores with a close range finish from Adam Yates's excellent cross to set up a pulsating final 30 minutes.

Port Vale came close to winning the game in normal time with efforts from Tudor and Miller both hitting the woodwork and Drench saving well from Callum Willock in the closing moments with a left handed tip over that kept his side in the game.

It then turned out to be Drench's evening as he shone in the spot kick shoot out to help his side progress to the third round.
