Four of the region’s top junior triathletes joined forces to take on the best in the country under the watchful eyes of Olympic heroes Alistair and Jonathan Brownlee.

The Lancaster team that travelled to Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal, just outside Ripon, consisted of Alasdair Fairhurst, 17, Sarah Hodgson, 17, Sam Monkhouse, 15, and Georgia Hannam, 15.

The quartet secured a top-three finish in the field of 20 teams in the first event run by the Brownlee brothers.

The event involved a 400m swim in Studley Lake, a 10km bike leg and 2.5km run that finished next to the ruins of the magnificent Abbey.

Alistair was first home for the Lancaster team finishing fifth junior overall with a swim time of 5:08, only seven seconds slower than Jonathan Brownlee’s swim and an overall time of 36:51.

Sam followed closely behind finishing as the fastest youth in the competition with a time of 37:48, an amazing achievement.

Sarah finished second overall female junior with a time of 39:36 with Georgia recording a highly respectable time of 41:41.

That put her as the second female youth overall.
