SLIDESHOW: Salt Ayre hosts Lancashire School Games gala

More than 250 pupils from 14 primary and secondary schools made a splash on Wednesday, March 11.

Morecambe and Heysham were represented by Morecambe Road School, with pupils winning eight medals – three gold and five silver.

Morecambe Road’s girls snatched gold and silver in the Key Stage 4 front crawl race, while the Key Stage 4 boys achieved silver in both heats of the 25m front crawl.

The Loyne Specialist School were Lancaster’s representative, bringing home 11 medals in the form of four gold, five silver and two bronze medals.

The school impressed spectators during the Key Stage 4 25m back stroke events, snatching gold in both the girls’ and boys’  races.

The event was organised by the county’s School Games Organisers and kicks off the larger SPAR Lancashire School Games.

Now in its ninth year, it is the biggest school games scheme in the county and is part of the national £128m school games programme.

Steve Jamieson, School Games Organiser for Lancaster said: “The Disability Swimming Gala marks an exciting year for fully inclusive sport in Lancashire.

“The event has been designed to ensure each child is challenged in a fun way.

“It was fantastic to see such high levels of sportsmanship and team spirit. A huge congratulations to everyone involved.”

Sports leaders from Lancaster & Morecambe College and Our Lady’s Catholic College helped out on the day.

Schools across the county are competing in a host of other sports including football, rounders, Boccia, athletics and tennis in a bid to make it through to the SPAR Lancashire School Games county finals in June.
