Shrimps ease through

Morecambe 5 (Twiss 9, 54, Hunter 61, Howard 70, Walker 90) Mangotsfield Utd 0 MORECAMBE moved into the last 16 of the FA Trophy with a convincing victory over their Southern League opponents.

Michael Twiss once again led the way with two quality strikes followed by rare goals from Garry Hunter and Michael Howard, his first in almost 80 games for the Shrimps, and a last minute strike from debut boy Jason Walker.

Twiss gave the Shrimps a perfect platform with a ninth minute goal as he took advantage of some slack marking to drill the ball past Steve Book.

Mangotsfield then enjoyed a good period and caused the Morecambe defence a number of problems.

An 18th minute Eliot Wilmot free kick was met by Dave Morrisey but his header looped over the crossbar and the big striker was in the thick of the action again 10 minutes from the break when he was found in space at the back post but lashed a shot wide when he should have done better.

The second half started with Wayne Curtis blazing over the bar from close range before Twiss put the Shrimps 2-0 ahead with a superb lob over Book from 25 yards out.

That gave Morecambe a clear lift and they added three more goals. Hunter latched on to David McNiven's flick to stroke the ball home before Howard opened his account for the Shrimps with a cool finish after exchanging passes with Walker.

The Shrimps' new striker then got in on the act himself with a left foot shot on the turn that beat Book low to his left after Adriano Rigoglioso's clever dummy to end the game in style for the home side.

At the end Morecambe assistant boss Mark Lillis praised his side for a professional performance.

He said: "This was a good cup win. Mangotsfield came to make things difficult but although we got off to a good start we then found it a bit difficult to get a second.

"We asked the lads to smarten things up in the second half and they did that and we scored some great goals. Twiss's second goal was superb and it was great to see Michael Howard on the scoresheet after so long.''

Looking to the next round he said: "When you get to the last 16 things start to get exciting for everyone and we will take what comes our way and give it our best shot.''

Mangotsfield boss Lee Howells said his side would have learned a lot from the game. He said: "We always knew it was going to be tough and the last thing we needed was to concede an early goal like we did.

"We then had a couple of chances ourselves but didn't take them and that is the difference between teams at this level.

"Overall though we have taken a lot from the game and the lads will have learned some valuable lessons.''
