Higginshaw 24-52 Heysham Atoms

THE Atoms moved five points clear at the top of the table with a convincing victory on their travels away in Oldham.

Stuart Lacey’s accurate kicking paid off almost immediately when a cross field kick was claimed by Billy Livingstone and the try scored wide out on the left wing.

A carbon copy of the first try was scored by the same personnel in the same manner moments later giving the Atoms an impressive 12-0 lead with the game barely five minutes old.

The Atoms were then forced to drop out from under their posts and a sustained attack brought Higginshaw’s first points in the 14th minute.

Higginshaw had now found a supply line into the Atoms’ territory on the back of more penalties bringing the scores level at 12-12 with their second try.

Liam Hall then crashed over, giving the Atoms an 18-12 lead as they regained the ascendancy in the game.

Loose forward Mark Walker scored the first of his three tries just before the break, capitalising from a knock on close to Higginshaw’s line.

The Atoms forced a drop out straight from the restart when exciting prospect Dan Helme spun out of a tackle and reached out, placing the ball over the line for his first senior Atoms try.

Mark Walker scored his second with the move of the game, hitting on to a short pass from brother Neil which owed a great deal to the decoy run of Dave McVernon.

Second row Callum Hall was rewarded for his considerable efforts with a try in the 54th minute.

Soon after Billy Livingstone scored his hat-trick, taking the Atoms into the 40 points mark for only the third time this season.

Dan Ginocchio returned to the side from an elbow injury showing no ill effects forcing his way over the line with 10 minutes remaining.

Mark Walker claimed his third try of the game making it 12 for the season in an excellent display of power running.

The last five minutes belonged to Higginshaw who finished the stronger scoring two converted tries.
