THIS top of the table encounter did not produce the flowing rugby that both sides are capable of, due in no small way to the tenacity of both defences.

Vale started well and in the second minute Foster drifted a penalty wide of the target as they took the game to Altrincham.

Ian Bird knocked players to one side, Gareth Tudor drove forward with support from Phil Watson as Altrincham scrambled, eventually putting the ball into touch on the five–metre line.

From the line-out the Vale surged for the line, Altrincham’s wing forward Rich Harding was shown a yellow card for illegally halting the move.

Vale opted for a scrum, Tudor broke to the right, the ball was recycled, Moore threaded the ball to Fergus Owens who ghosted over the surface for a try converted by Foster in the sixth minute.
