Carnforth’s run of away fixtures continued at the weekend as they travelled to face the 5th team of Preston Grasshoppers, winning 45-12.

The opening exchanges saw both sides unable to break the defences, the Preston pack got on with their job superbly with their number eight having a fine game.

Carnforth took the lead after 12 minutes when a kick ahead allowed centre Jack Edmondson to tackle the home winger before the ball came loose for Sam Tomlinson to sprint clear and dive over in the corner despite the attention of a Preston tackler.

The second try of the game came when a quick penalty was taken to allow Tomlinson to once again sprint away for his second try.

Going into half time 10 points up, Carnforth started the second half brightlty with three tries in the first 10 minutes.

Four minutes into the half and Donald Haddow was able to glide through the defence, Mathew Short converting.

Dale Lowrie and Kevin Hardy almost scored from the restart as they played a couple of one-twos but a last ditch tackle kept them out.

From the resulting play it was Lowrie who made the initial break before Jason Short was able to bulldoze his was through for a deserved try, his brother Mathew converting.

Soon after and Dan Blenkharn made another strong break before the ball went wide to winger Ben Brocklebank who showed his finishing skills by outsprinting the defence to score, again Short adding the extra two points. Preston hit back but Carnforth were dangerous on the counter and again Haddow was on hand to register a second of the day under the posts, Short converted.

Tomlinson went in search of his hat-trick - this time from the back row but when he was tackled the ball went wide again to winger Phil Metcalfe who went through to register the team’s seventh try of the day, Short adding his fifth conversion of the game.

Prop Shaun Hodgson almost grabbed the team’s eighth try but he was thwarted as Blenkharn then insisted on a clean sheet.

However, Preston were having none of that and two late tries gave them just rewards for their excellent efforts.
