Carnforth ended their Raging Bull North West Leagues Division Four North campaign with a 41-34 victory at home to relegated Burnley 3 on Saturday.
Burnley started well with two tries and a conversion in the first six minutes but Carnforth responded well when stand off Nick Hamer glided through for his first try of the day, Jack Edmondson converting.
Minutes later and a break by Jason Short saw the number eight kick ahead to allow Edmondson to take the ball over the line for the leveller at 12 each.
On the stroke of half time it was the hosts who took the lead when Hamer again burst through the defence to power away for his second of the day, Edmondson converting for a 19-12 interval lead.
From the restart it was Hamer who turned provider as he sent away Edmondson on a superb angle to sprint away and round the defence for a fine solo try.
Carnforth maybe thought it was time to take the game away from Burnley but the visitors had other ideas and hit back with a converted try and a penalty to reduce the gap to two points.
On the hour Carnforth scored again when Hamer latched on to excellent forward play to secure a well deserved and well earned hat-trick of tries, Edmondson increased the lead to nine.
Moments later and another break by the excellent Jason Short saw hooker Dave Hones receive the final pass to score and take a 36-22 lead.
Again Burnley refused to lie down and take the defeat and they hit back with two quick tries to again keep the deficit at two points.
With minutes remaining though it was Carnforth who clinched the game when their skipper celebrated his 40th birthday with a well worked try – again Short the provider.
Carnforth held on in the closing minutes as they clawed out a morale victory of 41-34.
