Senior golfers from all over the north of England converged on Morecambe Golf Club for the inaugural John Glover Trophy tournament, staged to honour the memory of a great local player who went on to become one of the sport's top administrators.

In all, 120 golfers turned out in the event won by Bill Fletcher from Hesketh who had the lowest Gross score of 70.

Morecambe member Thomas Winn had the best net score of 65.

Two of John Glover’s daughters, Fiona and Susan, were present during the event and they were joined by Dr David Marsh, an ex-Walker Cup player and past captain of the R&A.

He told organisers that he was delighted to be at Morecambe and pleased to be involved with the first ever event.

Morecambe member, Rory Callan, who was the man with the main responsibility for organising the day, said he and everybody involved had been tremendously pleased with the response from club members and other golfers.

He said: “We have had some tremendous feedback and all competitors seemed impressed by the course and by the event itself.

“There seems no doubt that the John Glover Trophy will become an important fixture in the senior golfer’s diary.”

Elsewhere, Thomas Winn secured his first Galvin Green Northern Order of Merit victory when he claimed the Acorn Trophy at Accrington.

And the Morecambe plus one player achieved it at the expense of last year’s winner, the host club’s Ian Hardman, who was a shot adrift.

They were the only players to better par, Winn adding a three-under 67 to his opening 70 which featured four birdies in each round, as his rival posted 67 and 71.

Meanwhile, Huyton & Prescot’s John Carroll maintained his lead at the head of the table by 30 points from Northenden’s Sam Prince who is five clear of Cheshire County clubmate Tom Dolan from Heswall.
