More than 300 riders come to Lancaster and Morecambe for youth cycling event

Riders from Salt Ayre Cog Set were amongst those who took part in the Screentek North West Youth Tour, the largest youth cycle tour in the country and round four of British Cycling’s National Youth Circuit Series.

More than 300 youngsters, coming from England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland and even Holland, made the trip for the four-stage bank holiday festival which started with a time trial on Morecambe Promenade on Saturday.

Riders then raced around a 3.3km hilly stretch near Lancaster Auction Mart, covering Quernmore Road and Wyresdale Road, for Sunday’s stage two.

The event then concluded at Salt Ayre Sports Centre on Monday with two shorter races.

There were some strong results for the Salt Ayre riders, both in the individual stages and in the overall classification, Ben Barlow taking 28th overall in the Category A Boys race for under 16s.

Eve Barrow came home fifth in the Youth B Girls time trial on Saturday while in the same category Tilly Percy took sixth in the fourth and final stage as the girls, from Queen Elizabeth School in Kirkby Lonsdale, came home 11th and 12th overall respectively.

There was also Salt Ayre success in the C Boys category, under 12s, as Isaac Atkinson finished sixth in the final standings and Dylan Edwards 10th after being at the sharp end of the four stages around the district.
