Morecambe Taekwon-Do Club students took part in a grading examination recently.

Master Oldham (8th Degree Black Belt), Head of Global Taekwon-Do UK, recently visited Morecambe Taekwon-Do to grade 15 Morecambe students.

Following an exhausting test, Master Oldham announced that all 15 students had successfully passed the grading and that he was promoting them all to their next rank.

Master Oldham also gave a special mention to Naomi Collins and awarded her a prestigious ‘A’ pass for displaying excellent technique through-out the test.

Morecambe Taekwon-Do, which is based in Christ Church Hall, Broadway, holds grading exams every three months and these events are an opportunity for coloured belt students to gain promotion to the next rank.

All students begin as a White Belt and must then successfully complete 10 gradings (usually one every three or six months) to reach the esteemed rank of Black Belt.

The recent grading was attended by students of all ages from six years old and included a wide range of abilities from White Belt to Red Tag.

The grading began with Master Oldham asking for all students to perform their current pattern.

In Taekwon-Do a pattern is a sequence of attacking and defending moves against an imaginary opponent. Typically, coloured belt patterns are between 20 and 40 moves long and get more complex as the student progresses through the grades from White to Black Belt.

Next Master Oldham assessed all members sparring to check the standard of their skills and agility.

In Taekwon-Do sparring is a great way to develop fitness and is also a good opportunity for students to demonstrate the range of kicks, strikes and blocks that they have learned.

Following the test Master Oldham commented that the overall standard of the club is very high and he hoped that everyone is enjoying learning Taekwon-Do with new club instructor, Mandy Clement (First Degree Black Belt).

Mrs Clement was assistant instructor at the club for many years and has recently taken over running the club from Mr Harvey (4th Degree Black Belt).

Mr Harvey is now GTUK Northwest Area Chief Instructor so will continue to support the club and attend future grading tests along with Master Oldham.

Patterns, sparring, destruction (adults only), self-defence and much more are taught at the club’s regular training sessions with Mrs Clement.

The classes are great fun, teach discipline and are also a good way to keep fit.

The club is currently looking for new members of all ages and abilities and beginners are very welcome at any time.

Classes are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays every week, children from 6.30pm-7.30pm and adults from 7.30pm-9pm.

If you are interested in any further details then please call Mandy Clement on 0782 8687 284 or visit www.gtuknorthwest.co.uk for further information.
