Both Torrisholme’s first and second team were victorious on the opening day of the Moore and Smalley Palace Shield season on Saturday.

Torrisholme first team captain Matt Jackson elected to bowl on New Longton’s trip to Boundary Meadow and his attack did him proud on their return to Division One.

Paul Fairhurst made 31 and Chris Walker made 50 but no one really managed to subdue the home attack with Mark Cottam and Dan Woods each taking two wickets and Simon Hicks chipping in with one.

Skipper Jackson and Tom Hird also bowled very tightly without taking a wicket as New Longton reached 160-5.

The Torrisholme response was lead by Mark Cottam (55) and Andy Butler (34) then Karl Hansson (42 not out) carried them home with Rehman Shah (22 not out) to complete a comprehensive win by eight wickets.

Torrisholme’s second team made the trip to Hutton to play Penwortham 3rd XI.

The hosts opted to bat first but the new look Torrisholme opening attack of James Ferguson and John Gates kept them on a tight leash.

Jack Heap bowled well in tandem with Jack Kar and Liam Bland made a useful breakthrough but the hosts’ middle order looked to be building a score above 200 when Gates and Ferguson were brought back into the attack.

They made immediate inroads as Penwortham struggled to 155 all out.

The Torrisholme reply was given a rip-roaring start by Paul Batty (52) whose 50 came up in only 30 balls.

Ritchie Kingham (42) carried the momentum forward and the loss of Graham (4) and Dan Clarke (12) in quick succession could not halt the gallop to victory in only 25 overs as James Ferguson (33 not out) and Grahame Clarke (8 not out) completed an impressive six-wicket win.
