Poor start to season for Morecambe

MORECAMBE suffered what new captain Lewis Edge will hope to be a rare and freak defeat at the hands of Preston on the first Saturday of the new season.

After winning the toss, Morecambe inserted Preston onto what looked a typical early season track which would offer plenty for the bowlers.

In many ways he was correct, the Morecambe opening bowling partnership of Gareth Pedder and Jono Gates bowled fantastically in tandem, bowling good areas and picking up wickets at regular intervals.

New professional Umar Amin chipped in with two wickets, however the former Carnforth professional Pedder, who has returned to Woodhill Lane this summer, bowled a controlled spell to take 6-46.

Preston were dismissed for 94, however a gutsy innings of 50 from S Nalaband frustrated Edge and company, taking Preston to a total they would never have dreamt of reaching at one point.

That said Morecambe were content with their efforts with the ball and were fully expecting their first win of the season. Morecambe lost new recruit Tom Barnfield early, however.

Josh Dixon and Amin seemed to keep the Preston bowlers at bay for a short while before the bowling of Malik (5-6) took hold, using the bowler friendly conditions to dismiss Morecambe for a pitiful 50.

Edge’s boys must now dust themselves down, and mark this result down as a freak one.

On paper the team is stronger than previous campaigns and they must look to reverse this result before next week’s clash with Netherfield at Woodhill Lane.
