Magpies pick Shrimps' pockets

Notts County 4 Morecambe 1

Morecambe's play-off hopes suffered a further setback as they went down to their second defeat of the week.

Sammy McIlroy's side had a nightmare start to the game and were made to pay as they were three goals down after just 18 minutes to the Magpies who sealed promotion to League 1 with their sixth successive win.

Top scorer Lee Hughes gave the home side the lead after just six minutes. Craig Westcarr made the run down the left hand side and Hughes was left in acres of space to head past Barry Roche from close range.

Seven minutes later the home side extended their lead with former Doncaster midfielder Ricky Ravenhill beating Roche with a stunning 30 yard drive that flew into the top left hand corner of the Morecambe goals.

Five minutes later the Shrimps were further rocked when a free kick floated into the box found Hughes and he turned sharply to drill a low shot past Roche.

The Shrimps played some good football going forward and went close through two Dave Artell headers and a Craig Stanley free kick and they were rewarded for their efforts late in the game.

Mark Duffy saw a shot deflected onto the crossbar and from the resulting corner Dave Artell headed past Kasper Schmeichel from close range.

The Shrimps' hopes of a comeback to improve their goal difference were soon dashed however when Ben Davies extended County's lead with a fourth goal from Jamie Clapham's left wing cross.
