Lancaster and Morecambe juniors’ selection honours

It’s been a busy time for Lancaster and Morecambe Athletics Club’s stars of the future.

Sam Mercer was selected to represent Lancashire for the first time in the Northern Athletics Inter Counties Championships at Blackburn, finishing 14th in the long jump with a leap of 4.52m.

A trio of athletes were in action on the same day at the British Mountain Running Championships at Betws Y Coed, Wales.

In the Under 20 women’s race 15-year-old Scarlet Dale finished and impressive third and was well backed up by Heidi Murray in 16th.

Following the race British Athletics announced that Scarlet was part of the 17-strong team that will represent Great Britain and Northern Ireland at the World Mountain Running Championship at the same venue this Saturday, September 19.

The good news didn’t end there with Heidi being included in the England team to compete in a Home Countries International at the same venue.

Club juniors were also in action at the recent Mid-Lancs Medal Meet in Blackpool, the final meeting of the season.

A new Grade 4 performance was achieved by Tom Pyle in the 400m with a time of 58.8s.

There were also personal bests for Elizabeth Watson in the 300m with a time of 49.4s, Isaac Consadine in the 100m recording 13.4s and Tom in the high jump of 1.55m.

Tom also competed in the discus for the first time recording 15.98m. Brother Will Pyle set a new 200m mark with 31.6s while Molly Newton–O’Brien’s personal best in the long jump of 4.99m earned her the gold medal.

Molly also won silver in the javelin and gold in the 200m while other medal winners were Kirsty Hamilton who won the silver in the 1500m, Erin Moffatt who achieved gold in long jump and silver in the high jump and James Stanley who ran an excellent race for gold in the 800m.

Three juniors were also in action at an open meet in Litherland, Merseyside.

Erin Moffatt jumped 4.67m to break a club record in the under 13s long jump that had stood for 16 years.

It was also a successful day for Macy Hinnigan who recorded best times in all three of her events the javelin, long jump and shot-put.

There was also a silver medal for Liam Hinnigan in the high jump.
