Morecambe Ladies opened their Women’s Premier League Northern Division One campaign with a big 6-1 win over Liverpool Marshall Feds on Sunday.
Morecambe took the lead after just five minutes when Feds goalkeeper Danielle Farrell tried to clear the ball only for it to fall straight to Megan Doherty on the edge of the box who rifled it into the back of the net.
It was 2-0 on 28 minutes, Millie Brown finding the unmarked Hannah Paling in space who turned and fired a shot over the keeper who was off her line to make it 2-0.
Feds were looking to half-time to regroup, but a poor free-kick fell to Doherty who strolled forward and placed a perfect ball into Georgia Lupton’s path and she beat the defender to slot the ball past the despairing dive of the keeper.
And before the oranges came out, Feds were further behind when Sian McGuire’s cross-field pass behind the left back found Laura Callis whose cross was slid into the net by Doherty to make it 4-0.
Four minutes into the second half McGuire found Callis in space on the right, Callis’s cross was pushed by a defender’s boot and Paling was in the right place to drive the ball home and make it five.
Doherty then raced passed the defence to slot home her third and put her team 6-0 ahead as Nick Barrett’s side ran riot.
Then the fightback started, a ball was played back to Fisher in goal and she decided to dribble it out of defence but Carina Mendez dispossessed her and knocked the ball into the empty net.
There was still time for Doherty to hook a Callis cross over bar, hassle the keeper from a Brown cross and then make Farrell move sharply to push away a well-directed free-kick as Morecambe’s Ladies made life in their new division look easy.
