Morecambe host Southend this weekend with both sides in need of a victory.
Former Hull City and Preston boss needs no introduction. Took over at Roots Hall from Paul Sturrock in March 2013 and after overseeing a Football League Trophy final defeat to Crewe the Shrimpers finished 11th in League 2. Having managed at a higher level Brown will have loftier ambitions in first full season in charge but needs to overcome a patchy spell of form.
Former Shrimps loanee is the Shrimpers’ top goalscorer this season. Midfielder has both 11 goals and 11 assists to his name in all competitions and has been rewarded with a new two-year contract at Roots Hall. The 28-year-old was signed on loan by Sammy McIlroy in January 2011 and played more than 20 games in Morecambe red before being released by parent club Carlisle.
If Morecambe need a win at the Globe Arena on Saturday then so do Southend with Brown’s promotion chasing side now nine games without a win to the Shrimps’ 10. Shrimpers were amongst early season pace setters and after 1-1 draw at home to Wycombe Wanderers on Saturday sit seventh in League 2, two points clear of Plymouth in the final play-off place.
Shrimps’ 3-0 home defeat to Southend in the first round of the FA Cup back in November was their first ever loss to the Shrimpers. Up until then, Jim Bentley’s side had a near perfect record against the Essex side with six wins and a draw in seven League Two meetings including a 3-1 triumph at Roots Hall back in September.
