Andy Fleming scored the only goal of the game as Morecambe ended their season on a high note at Southend.
The midfielder’s fifth goal of the season saw the Shrimps pass last season’s points tally of 56 on the final day of their League 2 campaign.
The visitors started the game slowly however and were almost made to pay.
Former Shrimps loanee Ryan Cresswell went close with an early header that was deflected just over the bar.
Barry Roche then had to be at his best to save well from Gavin Tomlin who got in behind the Morecambe defence before the home side wasted a glorious chance when Tomlin played in Barry Corr but he failed to find the target from 12 yards when he should have done better.
The Shrimps made the home side pay for those misses when Fleming’s tenacity paid off with the only goal of the game on 33 minutes.
Southend right back Sean Clohessy tried to shield the ball out of play but was robbed by Fleming who ran on goal and finished past Paul Smith from the tightest of angles.
The Shrimpers looked to hit back after the break with Corr volleying straight at Roche and Ryan Leonard turning an effort over from 10 yards after a good cross from former Morecambe winger Kevan Hurst.
Corr then stabbed an effort wide at the near post from an Anthony Straker cross before Jack Redshaw played his own side into trouble with a poor back pass that was hacked away by an alert Roche.
Morecambe always looked dangerous themselves going forward and went close to adding a second.
Lewis Alessandra curled an effort wide of the left hand-post after cutting in from the right and substitute Chris Holroyd forced Smith into a smart save low to his right with a well-struck shot from the edge of the area.
Fleming went close to a second in the final minutes when a fierce shot that whistled inches over the bar as the Shrimps ended the game – and the season – with a late flourish.
