Morecambe Ladies kicked off their new North West Women’s Regional League season with a 2-0 win at Chester City on Sunday.
Megan Doherty scored both second-half goals, with one coming from the penalty spot, against the newly-promoted side.
The first half was a tight affair with the hosts having the best of the play, Keri Sampson shooting over the bar and Becky Sheal seeing an effort saved.
At the other end, last season’s top goalscorer Doherty had a couple of half chances as the half drew to a close.
After the break the visitors improved with the help of a slight slope and breeze behind them.
And when Doherty decided to take on the Chester City defence single-handedly, showing her dribbling skills, she was only stopped by a clumsy challenge in the area.
The Shrimps Ladies hot shot picked herself up and hammered home the subsequent penalty off the post to give her side the lead.
The goal brought the game to life a little and with four minutes left, Doherty put the result beyond doubt when she ran through the right-side of the defence to slot in her second goal.
