Morecambe are still looking for their first Football League victory over Accrington Stanley after their Lancashire rivals took three vital points in their bid to beat the drop on Friday night.

Goals from Peter Murphy and Padraig Amond handed Leam Richardson’s side victory and meant the Shrimps have now gone 12 League 2 matches against Stanley without tasting success.

And Jim Bentley’s side never looked like ending that hoodoo despite starting the game strongly, looking particularly dangerous on the counter attack.

But there was a distinct lack of goal-mouth action in the opening quarter, Andy Fleming’s tame effort from the edge of the area on 10 minutes the only shot on target.

The game got the goal it needed on 27 minutes, Murphy deflecting home Lee Molyneux’s low free-kick to give the home side the lead.

But it did little to bring the match to life and in a first half of few chances, Jordan Burrow showed good technique a minute before the break to volley goalwards but his effort was easily saved by on-loan home ‘keeper Paul Rachubka.

Despite some Shrimps pressure early in the second period they largely disappointed and Stanley doubled their lead on 58 minutes.

Gary McDonald gave the ball away on half way, allowing Romuald Boco to weave his way through the heart of the defence and round Barry Roche, but his effort was blocked and the ball broke right to Amond who slid the ball home through the legs of substitute Chris Doyle from 10 yards.

And the game petered out to a scrappy conclusion, reflecting a disappointing clash between the two near neighbours.

The Shrimps never looked like dragging themselves back into the game and their night was summed up by Kevin Ellison’s effort on 82 minutes, the Rotherham match-winner got a clear run in on the left-side of the area but could only blaze his shot over the crossbar.
