Morecambe Ladies moved into the third round of the North West Regional League Cup with a 2-0 victory over Chester City on Sunday.
Becky Whittingham and Megan Doherty scored late goals to settle the tie in a game moved from Lancaster and Morecambe College to the Trimpell Club.
It was an even opening to the game with Jade Thornhill clearing an early Chester effort off the line.
Laura Callis also saw a header cleared from underneath the crossbar at the other end in a scoreless and at times scrappy half in which the Shrimpettes had the better of things.
Extra-time and penalties looked to be the on the cards as Morecambe did most of the pressing after the break.
The hosts almost broke the deadlock 10 minutes from time with visiting ‘keeper Cally Reid saving well from Doherty when the Shrimps hotshot was in on goal.
It had been an impressive display from the visiting stopper but her luck ran out as Whittingham sent in a vicious in-swinging corner that was out of the ‘keeper’s reach to give the home side the lead.
Doherty soon settled any nerves to make it 2-0 and had a couple of other chances to put the game well and truly beyond Chester’s reach.
But it mattered not as Morecambe worked hard for their place in round three.
