Morecambe were left frustrated as their game at Exeter was called off just over an hour before kick-off on Saturday.

A pitch that was fine at 1pm was rendered unplayable less than 60 minutes later as torrential rain arrived at St James Park.

The surface quickly became saturated with referee Andy D’Urso postponing the League 2 clash after an inspection.

It meant that having travelled nearly 300 miles for the game, Shrimps players, officials and fans were forced to turn round and head back north without a ball being kicked in anger after the freak storm.

Exeter went as far to release pictures to prove how quickly the situation had changed after criticism from some quarters for the late postponement, including from Jeff Stelling, the host of Sky Sports’ Soccer Saturday programme.
