Darren Green equalises for City from the edge of the area.

Lancaster City overcame 10-man Curzon Ashton in a pulsating game at a sodden Giant Axe on Saturday.

The Dolly Blues came back from 1-0 and 2-1 down to make it two wins on the bounce in one of only three games to beat the weather across the three Evo-Stik divisions.

Their cause was helped by the ninth-minute sending off of Curzon’s Scott Metcalfe for an apparent elbow meaning the visitors had to play the majority of the game a man down.

By that stage the game was already 1-1, Tony Evans having given John Flanagan’s side an early lead from close range after following in Metcalfe’s initial shot before Darren Green brilliantly chipped ‘keeper Joshua Ollerenshaw from the edge of the area to equalise for the home side on eight minutes.

Johno Hunt put Curzon back in front on 20 minutes, with the linesman ruling his effort had crossed the line after a scramble in the penalty area.

Evans was then denied a second a minute before the break, City stopper Danny McDonald doing well to get back and block a shot from the 10-goal front man after he had gone round the Dolly Blues ‘keeper.

After the break, whatever joint managers Neil Wainwright and Michael Stringfellow had said at half-time worked, as City turned the game completely on its head with two goals in three minutes. Ten minutes into the second half Tom Kilifin equalised from close range, taking on a defender before hammering a shot hard and low that squeezed in past Ollerenshaw to level the scores.

Two minutes later Ryan Elderton put the Dolly Blues in front, heading home Green’s cross off the underside of the crossbar.

In the final stages Curzon pushed for an equaliser without really testing McDonald as the home defence held firm. And that was to prove enough for the home side at Giant Axe, who travel to local rivals Bamber Bridge on Boxing Day hoping to make it three wins in a row.
