Third division CC Wanderers almost shocked Premier Division side Morecambe Royals in the first round of the Black Dragon Senior Challenge Cup.

It took a Lee Riley goal five minutes before the end of extra time to settle things for the Royals after the sides had been locked at 3-3 in normal time.

Daniel Caton. Robert Brockbank and Aaron Simpson scored for the Wanderers with a Johnny Durnan brace and Adam Garnett scoring for the Royals.

The Wanderers did have chances to level the game late on but the Morecambe side progressed to host Bolton-le-Sands in round two.

In the other first round game, Division One Freehold crashed out thanks to a six-goal salvo from Premier Division Bowerham who ran out 6-3 winners.

Ian Palwanker, with two, and Sean Morgan scored for the second-tier hosts but a Charles Laird hat-trick, two for Louis Butlin and one for Alastair Laird means Bowerham will travel to Preesall and Pilling in the second round.

In the round two matches played on Saturday, College AFC were victorious over Bentham for the second week in a row, this time needing penalties.

The sides couldn’t be separated after extra-time, level at 2-2.

Both sides had chances before Danny Blackburn finished a College counter attack by rounding the ‘keeper to score the game’s opening goal.

Bentham equalised shortly after half-time through Daniel Jackson and it was no surprise when they then went ahead through Adam Wilcox.

The visitors then failed to press home their advantage and make the game safe, Russell Moore equalising for the College.

After both sides drew a blank in extra-time, Bentham missed their first penalty as the other nine were scored, meaning College face the winners of Preesall and Pilling and Bowerham in round three.

Division Four side FC Brittania pulled off one of the shocks of the round when they dumped out Division Three high-fliers Moghuls with a 4-3 victory.

The home side’s goals came from Dave Rochester, Dave Bowes, Dan Jackson and John Taylor with a John Boothroyd brace and Mark Baldwin scoring for Moghuls.

FC Brittania face Division One side Westgate Wanderers in the third round.

Galgate ran out 6-0 victors in an all-Premier Division clash with a weakened Trimpell side.

Steve Wood got a hat-trick for the hosts, Craig Cottam a brace and Tom Eccles the other goal which means Galgate will travel to the winners of Kirkby Lonsdale and Carnforth Rangers in the next round.

Division One leaders Heysham saw their unbeaten start to the season end with a shock 6-2 defeat at home to lowly Arnside.

James Kirkham and James Barr both scored twice for the visitors with Adam Richardson and Ben Lenton also on the mark.

Premier Division side Highgrove were 9-3 winners over second division AFC Moorlands.

Luke Bradley scored four for the rampant hosts, Nathan Winder bagged a brace with Jake Hope, Connor Williams, and Jack O’Neil also on the scoresheet.

Adrian Jacobs, twice, and Johnny Salisbury scored for the game visitors with Highgrove away to the winners of Cartmel and Marsh United in round three.

Premier Division Caton United scored all seven goals in their 5-2 win at Division One Millhead.

Nathan Jackson got a brace, with Steve Oliver, Liam Moffatt and Adam Lund also scoring for Caton.

At the other end John Lupton and Phil Eccleston scored own goals but it didn’t matter as Caton moved on to face the winners of Storeys and Mayfield United.
