Paul Mullin’s goal was enough to hand Morecambe’s Reserves a win over Shrewsbury Town on Tuesday afternoon.

The striker was one of a number of Shrimps first-teamers to see action with Aaron McGowan, Laurence Wilson, Andy Fleming and Lee Molyneux also starting at the Globe Arena.

There was also another runout for Darren McKnight against his former club as the free agent midfielder looks to impress Jim Bentley.

The first real chance for either side came 18 minutes in.

A Molyneux corner caused problems with McKnight’s shot saved by Shaun Rowley before Luke Jordan’s follow up was blocked in the six-yard area.

The Shrimps saw a second shot cleared off the line just before the half hour with Mullin profiting from a Joel Bonner error only for for Mickey Demetriou to intervene.

The hosts were ahead from the resultant Fleming corner however, an air shot of a clearance from a Shrewsbury defender allowing Mullin back heel the ball in from a couple of yards out.

Another defensive error from the visitors nearly let Morecambe in for a second 10 minutes before the interval but after McGowan had pounced on Demetriou’s heavy touch he could only fire over from a narrow angle.

The first worrying moment for Kieran O’Hara was on 38 minutes as Jordan Wilson’s miscued cross hit the top of the crossbar before going behind.

It was always The Shrimps who looked likely to get the game’s next goal Rowley helping Jordan’s low shot round the post in the final action of the first half.

Jordan was at the centre of Morecambe’s first attack of the second period, his run and chipped cross setting up Molyneux who saw his volley well saved by a strong right arm from Rowley.

Clear-cut chances were few and far between though, Molyneux dragging a shot from distance wide 20 minutes from time.

At the other end McGowan produced a fine last-ditch tackle to deny Wilson a free shot in the area on 75 minutes.

John McAtee then pulled a shot from 20 yards wide for a young Shrewsbury side before O’Hara needed two goes to hang on to Chris Gallagher’s shot.

Despite the late Shrewsbury pressure they couldn’t find an equaliser with Morecambe victorious in the Final Third Development League West Division clash.
