Morecambe have completed the signing of Bury defender Joe Widdowson on a two-month loan deal.

The 25-year-old former Northampton and Rochdale man will act as cover for the injured Laurence Wilson who is set to miss the next eight or nine weeks with ligament damage.

Widdowson only signed a short-term deal at The JD Stadium earlier this month but has played just 13 minutes for David Flitcroft’s side this season.

Shrimps boss Jim Bentley said: “He knows the level and is a good athlete.

“He’s had a two-year spell at Northampton and a couple of years at Rochdale.

“It’s a good signing for us and hopefully he’ll just slip into the group and help carry on the good work that we’ve done so far.

“I’m pleased to have him on board. Laurence has done really well for us and it’s a big loss but Joe is a good fit.

“He’s at a good age, attack minded and good defensively so he ticks a lot of boxes and can hopefully do the business.”

He is set to go straight into the squad for the Shrimps’ trip to Tranmere on Saturday as Bentley’s side bid to make it five wins out of five in League 2 this season.
