Morecambe’s Under 18s lost their opening Youth Alliance game of the season 2-0 at home to Bury on Saturday.
The Shrimps showed plenty of promise but found it hard to break down a well-organised Bury side who played some good football at Kendal Town’s Parkside Road as Rob Harper scored twice.
Stewart Drummond and Neil Wainwright’s side made the better start but were behind six minutes in when a ball into the box was headed home by Harper.
Bury almost made it 2-0 10 minutes later when Jessie Arizie’s long-range effort rattled the crossbar however Morecambe began to regain their composure as Kyle Hawley fired the ball wide of the right-hand post.
The Shrimps continued to create opportunities as Ben Hedley saw his effort just go past the post before the best chance came midway through the half.
Hawley capitalised on an error in the Bury defence and found himself clean through on goal but saw his effort blocked by Shakers stopper Cameron McCulloch.
Despite a good spell of pressure the visitors made it 2-0 when Harper got his second, finishing from close range after being left unmarked in the box.
There was still time for Hawley to go close twice before the interval, seeing one shot blocked before a second went wide moments later.
Chances were few and far between in the second half, Arizie having a half chance gathered by Shrimps ‘keeper Niall Maher before Steve Yawson blazed over the bar at the other end.
With the game petering out Yawson then saw a goal ruled out for offside as Morecambe opened their campaign in defeat.
The Shrimps youngsters travel to Rochdale this Saturday before hosting Rotherham United in the FA Youth Cup on Saturday, August 27.
