Morecambe lost out 3-2 in their first meeting with Chester-le-Street on Sunday.

The Shrimps led 2-1 at the break but saw their advantage evaporate at Lancaster and Morecambe College in the Women’s Premier League Division One North vlash.

Hannah Williamson was at the heart of the hosts’ opener, playing a one-two with Hannah Paling before finishing well past advancing former Shrimps ‘keeper Catherine Clough.

The game went from end-to-end before Alex Meakin let fly with a shot from distance that left stand-in ‘keeper Emma Gardner with no chance as Chester-le-Street equalised.

Chances were few and far between however with The Shrimps going back in front three minutes before the break.

Georgia Lupton won a corner for the hosts and Becky Whittingham found Megan Doherty who nodded past a diving Clough.

Morecambe came out the livelier in the second half but it was the visitors who had the better chances.

Nichole Havery flashed a header past the post and then seemed to be pushed over by Jo Norris in the penalty area with the referee waving away Chester-le-Street’s appeals.

Lupton did bring a fine save from Clough but it was the visitors who levelled things up, Rachel Kay firing past Gardner for 2-2.

Laura Darmudy twice came close as the North East side went in search of a winner before Harvery latched on to Rae Taylor’s speculative pass forward and looped a shot over Gardner for the winner.
