Returning striker Megan Doherty helped Morecambe Ladies overcome City of Manchester on Sunday.

The hotshot who has been much missed while out through injury recently scored twice in the 5-3 victory and saw a possible hat-trick goal disallowed for offside.

The versatile Jo Norris, Laura Ivinson and Becky Whittingham completed the scoring.

The result means the ladies are two points behind top of the table Tranmere in second in the North West Women’s Regional Premier League.

They begin a frantic end to the season tonight, Tuesday, at Crewe Alexandra Ladies.

It is the first of three tough away games in a week that will decide whether the ladies can continue their rise with back-to-back promotions.

Following the trip to Cheshire tonight, the Shrimpettes visit third-placed Blackpool Ladies on Thursday evening before finishing their campaign at fifth in the table Bolton Ladies on Sunday.

They’ll be looking for three victories out of three to keep the pressure on Tranmere, with the Merseyside outfit needing to slip up in one game so the Shrimps can take the title.

Tonight’s crucial game at Crewe is a 7pm kick-off at Kidsgrove Athletic in Stoke.
