Morecambe’s newest fan favourite Ryan Williams is hoping The Shrimps can push on to safety after an important win over Aldershot on Tuesday night.

The 2-1 victory moves Jim Bentley’s side 12 points clear of the League 2 drop zone and eight short of the usual 50 required for safety.

The midfielder said: “It wasn’t a vintage performance but at this stage of the season three points is three points.

“All the lads are down there delighted. We’re 12 points ahead of them now so hopefully we can crack on and keep moving forward.”

The Shrimps were far from their best but an own goal 20 minutes from time and a late Gary McDonald header looked to have sealed the points before Danny Hylton’s 92nd minute goal made a few nerves jangle at the Globe Arena.

Williams said: “Naturally it’s going to be a little bit nervy, especially when they scored late on, but the lads worked hard, battled hard and you could see in the performance that they were still hurting from Saturday.

“It was nice to turn that defeat into a win tonight.”

The 21-year-old has made an excellent start to his Shrimps career after finally completing a drawn out transfer in January but the former Rhyl man is solely focused on the team performance at the moment.

He said: “Obviously it was good to get a couple of goals early on in my career here and then to start some games.

“At this point of the season we’re just looking at the collective point of view.

“It doesn’t matter who plays as long as we pick up them three points and keep moving forward.”
