On Saturday, Morecambe will look to upset the odds when they visit top of the table Port Vale.

The Valiants are unbeaten in their last six games and in Tom Pope have arguably League 2’s best striker.

The former Shrimps target, who Jim Bentley wanted to make one of his first signings nearly two years ago, has scored 27 goals in all competitions so far this season.

High-fliers also have plenty of experience in their ranks, with veteran defender Darren Purse and striker Lee Hughes amongst the recent arrivals at Vale Park.

Boss Micky Adams said: “Last season’s game against Morecambe was a wake-up call for everyone. They comfortably beat us.

“Goals late in game flattered them slightly, but the nucleus of the squad they had last season is still there.

“And while we had a comfortable away win earlier this season, it wasn’t as comfortable as people thought.

“The likes of Ellison, Alessandra, Will Haining, Drummond and McCready have a lot of experience at this level.

“They’re a big, strong, powerful unit and we’ll have to find ways of breaking them down but we must remain focused on defending and not switch off.

“I presume they have not got the biggest budget in the league, but they still remain competitive and you would expect that from a team run by Jim Bentley.”

Possible line-up: Neal, Purse, Duffy, Chilvers, Jones, Loft, Myrie-Williams, Vincent, Burge, Pope, Hughes.
