Morecambe shocked league leaders Port Vale to move within six points of the League 2 play-off places on Saturday.

Lewis Alessandra gave The Shrimps their fourth win in five with the only goal of the game on 63 minutes when he took advantage of Chris Neal’s fumble to score from close range.

From there visiting keeper Barry Roche made a string of fine saves.

The Shrimps also had to overcome the blow of losing defender Andy Wright with 18 minutes to go when he was sent off for a second yellow card.

But that only served to make this an even more memorable win against a normally free-scoring side many have tipped to win the title.

There were certainly a few scares along the way especially when Port Vale’s impressive left back Daniel Jones went close with two long-range efforts that flew narrowly wide of Roche’s goal.

Doug Loft and Jennison Myrie-Williams also went close as the Shrimps’ defenders worked overtime to maintain their clean sheet.

And when they did break through Roche was superb with one double save from Myrie-Williams and Richard Duffy particularly memorable.

The game started with Port Vale quickly showing their intentions with an attack in the first minute that saw Burge presented with a chance but he could only stab the ball straight at Roche.

After that early scare Morecambe settled into the game and matched the home side.

Wright forced Neal into a save after a quickly taken corner before the Shrimps failed to convert the first real chance of the game when McDonald again provided the danger down the left with a cross to the far post which Kevin Ellison diverted wide at full stretch with Neal stranded.
