Morecambe picked up their first win in four games with a comfortable victory over a poor Barnet side at the Globe Arena on Saturday.
Goals from Kevin Ellison and Andy Fleming gave Morecambe the perfect start in the opening 10 minutes and two Richard Brodie spot kicks in the final 10 sealed the three points.
Jon Nurse scored a late consolation goal for the visitors, for whom the largely anonymous Edgar Davids played the full 90 minutes.
The home side, without the injured Barry Roche, Will Haining and Jack Redshaw, started on the front foot with Lewis Alessandra twice testing Graham Stack in the opening five minutes.
First he saw a deflected effort from a narrow angle tipped over and then the former Arsenal stopper beat away another Alessandra effort after the Morecambe man had breezed past Elliot Johnson on the right corner of the box.
Stack was beaten inside six minutes however, Kevin Ellison doing well to turn his man on the edge of the box and firing in a low shot that beat the visiting goalkeeper via a deflection off David Stephens.
The Shrimps doubled their lead 10 minutes in, as a Barnet side that hadn’t conceded in their previous four league games were exposed defensively again.
A pinpoint Gary McDonald pass dissected the sluggish visiting defence and Andy Fleming was given time and space to beat Stack low into the corner from 10 yards.
From that point on the first half was very flat with the home side taking their foot of the peddle to the frustration of boss Jim Bentley and Barnet lacking any cutting edge going forward.
A game that started in bright sunshine had turned to heavy rain at the start of the second period and the game went the way of the weather with very little quality from either side.
It took until 25 minutes from time for the first shot in anger in the second half.
Shrimps skipper for the day Nick Fenton carelessly gave the ball away to Nurse who drove at the home defence before cutting back to Mark Byrne who fired harmlessly over from the edge of the area when he should have done better.
Richard Brodie then tested Stack 18 minutes from time but the visiting ‘keeper comfortably stopped his curling right foot effort after he’d cut in on the left edge of the area.
The Shrimps were rarely troubled and finally put the game to bed in the final 10 minutes with two Brodie penalties, taking his tally to the season to five with all of them coming from 12 yards out.
First, Alessandra nipped in ahead of Barry Fuller in the box and the Barnet full back was harshly adjudged to have brought him down allowing Brodie to step up and fire the ball high to Stack’s left to make it 3-0.
And the Shrimps number 10 well and truly made his miss from the spot against Accrington on Tuesday night a distant memory when he scored a second penalty, this time sending Stack the wrong way after Krystian Pearce had been penalised for handball while on the floor five minutes from time.
The home side did concede a late consolation goal, Nurse poking home a volley from six yards in stoppage time after Izak Reid had miscued a clearance back into the penalty area.
