Morecambe 2-0 Preston North End

TWO second-half goals gave the Shrimps an excellent victory in a far from friendly pre-season encounter at the Globe Arena on Saturday.

Jordan Burrow and Danny Carlton provided the goals to give the Shrimps a win they fully deserved while Preston’s defeat will give their boss Graham Westley plenty to think about.

A fairly even first half saw Kevin Ellison provide the first real chance of the game in the eighth minute, with a first-time left-footed 25-yard volley that flew just wide of Thorsten Stuckmann’s upright.

Lee Trundle went closer for Preston five minutes later from a well-executed 25-yard free-kick which dipped just over the bar but that proved to be a rare effort on goal for North End.

The Shrimps created the clearer chances with the excellent Andy Fleming playing in Burrow who curled a shot wide before Andy Wright tested Stuckmann in the 35th minute with a well driven free-kick.

North End’s David Amoo went closest in the 42nd minute, when he drove an excellent left footed shot from 20 yards, which forced Roche to tip over the bar.

The second half started with the Shrimps opened the scoring in the 49th minute. Lewis Alessandra lofted in a cross from the right and Burrow beat Keith Keane at the far post to head past Stuckmann from close range.

The youngster was replaced by new loan signing Richard Brodie on 66 minutes and the former York striker was quick to make his mark with the Shrimps’ fans with two whole-hearted challenges.

The game became something of a battle with John Mousinho and Stewart Drummond involved in a stark exchange and Joel Byrom booked for a shocking tackle.

The Shrimps kept their cool however and added a second two minutes from time when Dan Parkinson produced a fine low cross which Carlton turned in at the near post to seal a fine win.
