Morecambe left to rue missed first-half chances as they were held to an entertaining draw by Bristol Rovers at the Globe Arena on Saturday.
Jack Redshaw put Jim Bentley’s side ahead after just 67 seconds and the striker then had a series of chances to increase The Shrimps lead in the opening period.
But a second goal didn’t come and Elliot Richards headed past Barry Roche three minutes after the break meaning two of the league’s in-form sides took away a point each after a pulsating second 45 minutes.
The home side made the perfect start, Redshaw making room for himself 20 yards out before firing a low shot past Steve Mildenhall and into the bottom left-hand corner inside two minutes.
Having scored his 11th goal of the season, the diminutive striker went his search of his 12th with a succession of first-half chances.
On 13 minutes, breaking from half way, he danced past Lee Brown and beat Mildenhall only to see his effort from 10 yards cleared off the line.
It was quickly becoming all about the former Altrincham man when on 21 minutes Mildenhall had to be at his best to tip a low 25-yard drive round the right-hand post.
Redshaw had another sight of goal on 27 minutes, with Bentley’s side once again hitting the visitors on the break.
The striker was played in on the left side of the area by Kevin Ellison before cutting in on to his right only to curl his shot harmlessly over the bar.
And shortly before the break Redshaw saw and effort from 10 yards blocked in front of the goal line after good work down the left from Lewis Alessandra.
The Shrimps were made to rue not going into half-time further in front on 48 minutes, an unmarked Richards deftly heading home Brown’s left-wing cross from six yards out to level things up for John Ward’s side.
The goal rocked the home side who had to withstand some pressure from the visitors before their first sight of goal in the second half, Ryan Williams, fresh from signing a new one-year contract, firing in a dipping 30-yard effort that Mildenhall did well to beat away.
That seemed to settle Bentley’s men in what turned into an excellent end-to-end contest.
Redshaw saw a shot from a narrow angle blocked by Mildenhall 20 minutes from time before Alessandra should have put his side ahead two minutes later.
Unmarked in the box he could only head Robbie Threlfall’s excellent left-wing cross against the post from 10 yards out.
It was then Rovers’ turn to miss a great chance with a quarter of an hour to go, goalscorer Richards bursting through several Shrimps tackles far too easily but he could only shoot tamely at Roche when through one-on-one.
Neither side managed to get the decisive goal, an injury to Seanan Clucas killing any momentum either side had, with the visitors far happier with a share of the spoils, extending their unbeaten away run to six games.
