Fleming raring to go after injury hell

MORECAMBE boss Jim Bentley is hoping Andy Fleming will be like a new signing next season.

The talented young midfielder burst onto the scene at the Globe Arena when he scored twice against Coventry City in the Carling Cup two seasons ago but has undergone an injury nightmare ever since.

Last season the former Wrexham player made just 11 appearances after picking up ankle and knee injuries and Bentley is hoping the midfielder will have much more luck this season.

He said: “Andy has had an operation this summer to clean up his knee and he has been in over the summer working with fitness coach Dan Birdsall. The lads report back to training next Monday and he is raring to go.

“We all know what a good player he is and it is so unfortunate that he has been hit by injuries since he joined us. If he can get the luck he deserves and get a good injury-free run in the side he will be like a new player for us and one that could really catch the eye for us.”

Bentley is also hoping to pick up players for the future as the Shrimps set their sights on improving their own junior set up.

Goal

The club’s goal is to set up its own development centre after ending its links with previous organisers Elite last week.

Bentley said: “The club is determined to produce its own players for the future because it has to.

“You only have to look at the success of Crewe over the years and their recent sale of Nick Powell to show how important it is to grow your own talent in this day and age.

“Apart from the odd club there is not a lot of money floating around the game at League 2 level and we can’t go out and sign players for a lot of money so it is important that we do all we can to bring our own through.”

*MORECAMBE left back Laurence Wilson will join fellow League 2 side Rotherham United when his Shrimps contract expires on July 1.

The 25-year-old has signed a one-year deal to become Steve Evans’ ninth signing of the summer for the much-fancied Millers.

Wilson, who missed the last few weeks of the season with a fractured knee cap, told Shrimps boss Jim Bentley back in April that he wanted to leave the club for a new challenge.

Bentley has already replaced the former Chester man having signed former Bradford left back Robbie Threlfall last month.

*THE Shrimps have made two more changes to their fixture list for the new season by arranging two Friday night fixtures with Cheltenham Town.

Morecambe will now travel to face the Robins on Friday, September 28, and host the reverse fixture on Friday, January 18, 2013.

Last week the Shrimps announced that they will travel to face Oxford on Good Friday 2013 (March 29) instead of the originally planned March 30.

*THE Shrimps’ Capital One Cup tie against Blackpool will be staged at Bloomfield Road on Sunday, August 12.

The game will kick off at 3pm with tickets to be priced at £10 and £5.
