Crewe’s Nick Powell warned over Morecambe Twitter comments

A CREWE Alexandra player has been warned by his club following accusations made on Twitter after their game with Morecambe last Saturday.

England Under-17 international Nick Powell, who scored the Alex’s equaliser in the 2-1 victory over the Shrimps at the Globe Arena, called Morecambe midfielder Andy Fleming “a girl” after accusing the former Wrexham man of scratching him.

On the Tuesday following the game, Powell posted: “Fuming at that ‘girl’ that plays for morecambe. Thinking he’s top man after gettin bullied by crewe and started scratching players.”

Then after seemingly being contacted by Shrimps fans, he wrote on his account @NickPowell_25 the following day: “And Morecambe fans...On about Fleming or what ever his name is. Scratches like a lil girl.”

Finally, referring to Max Clayton’s 94th minute winner for the Alex, he wrote: “Yo don’t get all bitter coz we beat ya last minute.”

A spokesman for Crewe Alexandra said: ““Crewe Alexandra Football Club does allow our players to express themselves and voice an opinion through social networking.

“Obviously, there are boundaries and on this occasion one of our players has clearly gone beyond that. The language and tone of his tweet in regards to the match at Morecambe is unacceptable and we can only apologise to anyone who was offended.

“Although we encourage players to communicate with the supporters, Nick Powell accepts he was in the wrong and has been warned about his future conduct when expressing himself online.”

Highly-rated attacking midfielder Powell has been linked with a move to Premiership giants Arsenal in the past.
