Chairman calls for increased support

MORECAMBE FC chairman Peter McGuigan has made a renewed call for the people of the town to get behind the Shrimps.

Speaking at the club’s annual gala draw on Saturday night, McGuigan said he was convinced the club could mount a promotion push if it could attract a few hundred more people through the gates on a weekly basis.

He said: “Last year our average crowds were just over the 2,100 mark and when you realise that the league average is closer to the 5,000 mark we did remarkably well to compete as well as we did.

“We were not helped by three midweek games in February and March that saw exceptionally low crowds and we have been promised that there won’t be as many fixtures in that period again next season which is good news.

“It’s never a good idea to play on Valentine’s Day and with midweek Champions League fixtures at that time of year as well it is always going to be hard.

“But we know we have to do our bit as well and we need to improve our home form. If we do that I am sure that will help but we have also been bold with our season ticket pricing which has had a great response and I hope people continue to buy into what we are trying to achieve.

“We are also looking at the possibility of having a few Friday night games as well to see what the response would be.

“A few hundred people extra every week makes a big difference to the budgets and the funds available to the manager.”

The Shrimps have already reduced the price of some season tickets in a bid to boost crowds that fell as low as 1,207 last season.

Mr McGuigan praised local businesses for their support at the draw, which saw a record number of entries to win prizes including advertising on the back of the Shrimps’ shirts and shorts.

He said: “We are extremely grateful for the support of all the local businesses who have shown great backing for us. We all know times are not easy and we have had fantastic backing.”
