Bentley: It was vital to bounce back
Morecambe boss Jim Bentley was delighted to see his side respond to Saturday’s disappointing defeat at home to Exeter with victory over Aldershot on Tuesday night.
The Shrimps saw off the struggling Shots with a battling 2-1 win in a far from vintage contest on a difficult Globe Arena pitch.
And Bentley said it was vital his side bounced back after the 3-0 defeat to the Grecians.
He said: “The main thing was to get a response from Saturday.
“There was no-one more wounded than me. We got the lads in early tonight and told them what was expected.
“I keep going on about this fine line but it was a fine line tonight and a fine line on Saturday.
“But tonight we were nice and disciplined, hard working and it wasn’t pretty at times but we got a little bit of luck with the own goal.
“They pushed forward and could have picked them off a couple of times before we got the second goal and the only blip for me is to concede late on.
“I love the lads getting clean sheets, we’ve had quite a few this season and that should certainly have been another one.”
The win moves The Shrimps 12 points clear of the relegation places and ever closer to the 50 point mark that usually means League 2 safety.
Bentley said: “We’re up to 42 points now and people might say I’m negative, but it’s important you put the teams below you to bed before you try and pick off the ones in front of you.
“It’s important we got the result tonight because we’re at home and we could have got sucked back in with a defeat.
“We go to top of the table on Saturday and the pressure’s off us a little because people will be expecting Port Vale to beat us.
“But we’ve taken nine points from our last 12, won our last two away games, and we’ve scored eight goals in the last four games so we should go there confident.”
